Northern Ireland War Memorial mark anniversary of the Belfast BlitzThe Northern Ireland War Memorial marked an anniversary of the Belfast Blitz with a wreath laying ceremony at the mass blitz grave in Milltown Cemetery. This commemoration coincided with the anniversary of the Fire raid which took place on 4/5 May 1941, resulting in the loss of over 200 lives. On that night, Belfast suffered its second major air raid of the Belfast Blitz. The attack lasted around 2 hours during which 237 tons of explosives were dropped along with 96,000 incendiaries, causing the centre of the city to become an inferno. The mass grave exists for those killed across the four raids of the Belfast Blitz who were found with items such as crucifixes or rosary beads.
